Maybe it’s just me, but attacking cute, fluffy, pink rabbits on Bunny Shooter isn’t quite as gratifying as annihilating those patronising pigs on Angry Birds. It just makes me feel bad. They’re bunnies! But once I got past my self-righteous moral concerns and actually started popping some caps, one thing became very clear….
It was an hour later and I hadn’t mowed the lawn, I hadn’t emptied the dishwasher and I hadn’t fed the cats. I looked at the clock and thought, ‘5 more minutes and then I’ll do it’. Mecapix, from Robotalism Games, is an innovative and highly entertaining mash-up of genres. Take some Tetris-like puzzle pieces, add some shooter action, the likes of Galaga, and throw in the pattern recognition found in something like Donkey Kong, and you can begin to envision what to expect in Mecapix. The game is obviously a loving homage to the classics of the 80s; however, like many of those favorites, the difficulty of Mecapix can be unforgiving for those not willing to give it their maximum attention.
Mecapix is a simple concept at its core. Various arrangements of blocks (called Mecas) fall from the top of the screen. The player must draw his or her own block figures (PIXes) at the bottom of the screen to send upwards and combat the falling arrangements. For each block that gets past your defenses, you lose a life. Lose too many lives, and it’s game over. Simple, yes, but Mecapix intensifies the complexity as you progress through the levels. Alright all you aspring bandits out there…mount up for one of the most addicting games that I’ve yet to find for my iPhone. And that game is….(drum roll)….High Noon! I absolutely love it when an iPhone developer gets everything about a game right. From the overall look to the ease of gameplay to the price point, this thing is just awesome.
The game itself is pretty straightforward. It’s a one-on-one multiplayer western style shooter. It takes advantage of the iPhone’s anonymous multiplayer features and allows you to challenge other players across the globe. The point of the game is to become the most hated/feared bandit in all of the old west by increasing your level through repeated duel victories. Each time you pair up there is a specified “reward” if you kill the other. As you get more infamous (kill more folks) your level and your reward will all continue to rise. The afterlife has been thrown into disarray with demons and angels scattered about the universe. It is your job, in Angel Bounce, to restore the powers that be to their rightful afterlife locations. Angels and demons both fall from the sky and you, acting as a cloud, choose to bounce the angels back to heaven and allow the demons to fall to the depths of hell. The story line is interesting; basically there has been a cosmic upset and angels and demons have been bounced around. They need to get back to their rightful homes and it is your job to get them there.
Angel Bounce is a pretty basic and easy to navigate game. It has all been seen before and the mechanism is nothing special. You navigate the cloud across the screen to bounce the angels back to heaven, much like many other app store games. The only catch is you must avoid the demons that are also falling from the sky. When you bounce the demons back into heaven they are considered “saved” and will lower your overall score. If you happen to let an angel fall into hell they are considered “condemned” and it also lowers your score. Read the rest of this entry »
Right after Apple announced new Game Center and its November release, Firemint sent us an email to let you know that it will seamlessly incorporate Apple Game Center features into its hit games Flight Control and Real Racing via the Cloudcell platform. The Game Center features for these games will be available on the supported devices (iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and iPod touch 3rd and 4th generation), and will also be mirrored on Cloudcell to offer the same features to the non-supported devices. The Game Center features should be introduced right after Game Center is released, updates will of course be free.

Halfbrick has released a new update for its iPhone game Monster Dash, available in the App Store for 99 cents. The update gives Barry the chance of collecting a new power-up; a badass motorcycle will make you invincible for all kinds of things that you come across. It will also allow you to view new stats tracking and collect new achievements. They also fixed a few nasty bugs and made the pickung up of a heart easier. Update your Monster Dash game now or get the latest version of the game if you didn’t already because it rocks!
Racing games and the iPhone is a match made in heaven. The in-built tilt technology lends itself perfectly to manoeuvring the car as it mimics a steering wheel. Unlike many other racing games the developers of Fast and Furious really seemed to have nailed the interface between the game controls and the iPhone’s accelerometer. There is no ridiculous over steer or need to tilt your iPhone too far in one direction to make the car budge an inch. Sensitivity is often a problem with racing games but Fast and Furious has been perfectly calibrated to provide players with a game that feels realistic but with an element of control in place. Pinball games in any setting are great fun, so playing Wild West Pinball for the iPhone is always going to provide you with hours of entertainment. Rather unsurprisingly the aim of the game is to get as many points as you can by nudging nodes, bouncing bonuses and generally pelting your ball to within an inch of its life. You get three balls to get the best score possible and the game makes excellent use of the iPhone’s touch screen technology. Toobz pits you and your spanner against the clock as you race to construct an elaborate maze to channel the impeding rush of water about to spoil your lawn. The mechanics of the game are based on the popular Tetris game, which means you have to find the right shaped pipe to connect to another and create a continuous chain of blocks. Unfortunately, the exact type of pipe you need doesn’t just appear and you often have to wade through numerous other shapes until you get the right fitting pipe and when you’re racing against the clock this really puts the pressure on.
