OK, maybe no the drugs part but the latest offering by Gameloft, Guitar Rock Tour, sets out to combine the latest craze in computer gaming with the iPhone’s cutting edge touch technology. Following in the footsteps of Guitar Hero and Rock Band this addictive application puts users’ digital dexterity to the test as they shred away to the music like a cross between Slash and Mozart. At £3.49/ $5 the application is at the upper end of the games ladder, however, the combination of smooth graphics, pumping acoustics and classic track list make the application excellent value.

How to Shred Your iPhone

The game offers users the chance to either jam away on the guitar or bash out the beats on the drums. The ability to plug in headphones allows for total immersion in the game as players attempt to tour the circuit and achieve global rock star fame in career mode. Whilst strumming away to tunes such as Smoke on the Water, What’s My Age Again and Beat It, can be mastered relatively quickly on the easier levels, users may find that the drums take slightly longer to master. For the purpose of parity I should point out a few of negatives in the (although there aren’t many). Although the track list is stocked with instantly recognisable hits the experience is slightly tainted by the records not being by the original artists.

Also, if you fancy a quick jam session then you first need to work your way through the career mode in order to unlock the majority of the songs. However, this feature does increase the overall gaming aspect of the application. The biggest bug bear with the game though is that after half hour of ripping the chords you may find yourself needing to recharge your iPhone’s battery. Overall though these niggles aren’t enough to dampen the hours of fun you’re guaranteed to have tapping away to some of the biggest rock tunes in the world.

Don’t think that this is just a clone of the last one however. TTD features new challenges (held notes, multi-notes, and boss levels) as well as an impressive new sound track featuring big name artists like Daft Punk and The Chemical Brothers. The graphics have also been revamped, and some tracks even have their own specific themes.

Overall, TTD will only set you back a Lincoln ($5 US) while providing hours of gameplay.
